Passing wind can be embarrassing, and on an average you do it 15 times a day without noticing it. But, bloating or feeling gassy makes us uncomfortable. and we often blame it on something we eat. But more often than not, the food you eat is not the reason. However, identifying the cause of bloating and changing your diet accordingly can help you tackle the problem. If you fart often, you should try this remedy.

Here are a few common causes of bloating and how you should combat it:

1. Irritable bowel syndrome: It is not a disease as a whole, but a whole bunch of symptoms that indicate changes in the working of your gastro intestinal tract. You might even experience pain, constipation or diarrhoea.

What not to eat?

You should avoid eating wholemeal bread, oats, muesli, digestive biscuits, cereal bars and all breakfast cereals other than rice krispies. As reducing the intake of cereal fibres eases symptoms by 30-40 %. Read about 6 triggers of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) you should avoid.

2. Celiac disease: If you have abdominal pain along with fatigue and weight loss you could be suffering from celiac disease.

What not to eat?

This disease is an adverse reaction to gluten, so you should avoid everything that has gluten. Foods like pasta, bread, different pies and gravies made from wheat, barley (jau) and rye (mustard) are a strict no no! It is best to visit a doctor and get a blood test for celiac disease.

3. Stomach cancer: Bloating, along with loss of appetite and indigestion can be a sign of stomach cancer. It is best to get it diagnosed from a doctor. To keep the digestive system working, it is advised to eat small meals throughout and not eat only three heavy meals. Also, inducing fibre rich foods such as fruits and vegetables relieves some symptoms of stomach cancer.

What not to eat?

Foods with high salt and oil are best avoided.

4. Ovarian Cancer:Perpetual bloating along with abdominal pain is a symptom of ovarian cancer. Symptoms of ovarian cancer are vague and hence it is diagnosed in later stages. You may like to read about other reasons why you feel bloated.

Irrespective of these causes if you feel bloated you should avoid eating beans, pulses, broccoli, cabbage and foods containing sugar alcohol sorbitol.
