What is the right way to use apple cider vinegar for weight loss, diabetes and acidity?

Apple cider vinegar is the new health drink in town and is believed to be useful for some health problems. From treating acid refluxes, GERD, controlling diabetes, soothing sore throats, and weight loss, it sounds like a one-stop solution for all your health needs.

Many people are unaware of different factors like its acidity and colour that should be considered before buying apple cider vinegar. And since it is easily available, many people start using it without consulting doctors or nutritionists.

Dr Tejender Kaur Sarna, Nutritionist and Lifestyle Coach, says that one should use apple cider vinegar under the consultation of a qualified nutritionist or a doctor. The effects of apple cider vinegar vary from person to person, and there's no one-size fits all solution when it comes to consuming apple cider vinegar. Apart from the quantity, doctors suggest different ways of drinking it. One doctor might tell you to dilute your apple cider vinegar with cold water, whereas he might tell someone else to dilute it with lukewarm water. It will vary from person to person and condition to condition. Also, for it to be effective, you have drink apple cider vinegar regularly for 30-35 days.

How to use apple cider vinegar

For diabetes--Although there's not much research about the efficacy of apple cider vinegar to treat diabetes, Dr Sarna says that it increases insulin sensitivity and helps in lowering blood glucose levels. Apple cider vinegar helps in complete digestion of complex carbohydrates which is essential in diabetes.

For treating diabetes, you should drink apple cider vinegar twice a day after meals, usually after breakfast and dinner. However, its dosage varies from person to person depending on their sensitivity to insulin and blood glucose levels. So if you are planning to use apple cider vinegar to manage diabetes, it is best to consult a doctor.

For weight loss--Even though the dosage will vary from person to person, a dilution that can suit all is 2:3, which means you take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and mix it with three teaspoons of water. Drink it twice a day after meals.

For acid refluxes--To treat GERD, drink apple cider vinegar diluted in 1:5 ratio on an empty stomach.

Side effects--Apple cider vinegar is generally safe, but Dr Sarna warns against using it more than twice a day. If taken in huge quantities and more than twice a day it can cause acidity, skin rashes and a burning sensation in the stomach. Plus, treating these side effects also takes a long time and hence it is best to use it under the guidance of a nutritionist or a doctor.
