Monsoon showers are fun but staying safe, and infection-free is a bit of a challenge. It goes without saying that monsoon also brings with it a range of infections and diseases. The warm, wet and humid weather is a breeding ground for mosquito-related illnesses, water-borne infections and viral infections. The sudden change in temperature during this season also ups the risk of infection, especially, children and the elderly. One such common infection during monsoon is the viral infection of the eyes. Our expert Dr D. S. Chadha Director, Department of Internal Medicine, Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi highlights key symptoms and suggests some necessary precautions to be taken during the monsoons for viral infections. Gritty feeling in the eyes: If you feel the presence of sand particles in the eyes, then it is a sign you need to talk to your doctor. The gritty or irritated feeling in the eyes over time could indicate an eye infection. Here are the causes of sticky eyes you must know.

Swollen eyelids: Another common sign of viral infection of the eyes is swelling of the eyelids. This could be due to an underlying inflammation of the eyes. You can soothe the swollen eyes by applying cold compression but do consult a doctor if it pains or doesn’t go away in a day or two.

Irritation and Itching: If you suffer from viral infection of the eyes, you might experience irritation and itching sensation in the eyes. This in some cases, might be associated with discharge from one or both the eyes. Burning sensation in eyes and skin rashes along with high fever and fatigue could also indicate flu. Also read about the causes of white eye discharge.

Blood clots around the cornea: In some cases, you can also see blood clots around the cornea (the black/brown coloured part of the eye). If this happens, then do not ignore but immediately consult a doctor and get it treated before the infection spread to the entire eye.

Precautions you need to keep in mind:

1. Keep yourself clean and detect early signs of an infection. Consult your doctor immediately and avoid self-medication.

2. Avoid contact with the infected person as it can put you at risk of infections.

3. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching your eyes often without washing your hands.

4. Drink loads of water, especially if you suffer from flu along with eye infections, as it helps in flushing out toxins from the body and helps you get on track at the earliest. Here’s more on how to prevent monsoon-related eye infections.
