Mental illness is quite common in India. However, because of the fear of social stigma, these people do not come out in the open and fail to get any help. Also, the fact that these people need to speak to someone close, consult a psychiatrist or support group to cope with the situation is also not known by many. In such a case, getting help from a rehab can go a long way in helping you to deal with the condition. Dr Madhumita Ghosh, Senior Psychologist, Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi shares inputs on why rehab is a good idea for people with mental illness and how it helps. Rehabs help the patient to evaluate the condition and also makes sure that the needs of the patient are met with in a supportive manner. Here are few treatment options that a patient has to undergo if planning to seek support and care from a rehab.
Clinical therapy: It is the first line of therapy a patient with mental illness has to go through. It is usually prescribed for the initial stage to reduce symptoms caused by mental illness. The patients are recommended to gradually wean off the medication as they get used to the coping mechanism. Moreover, the intake of medications at rehabs is closely monitored.
Individual therapy: It helps the patient to talk to a therapist on a one-on-one basis and address personal issues if any, to the expert. This therapy can help you identify the link between the illness and thus, devise a treatment plan accordingly. It can help the person to change the self-depreciating thoughts and adapt to new ways and evaluate the world.
Group Therapy: In this type of therapy, the patient can open up and share his feelings and ordeal with others facing the same problems. It is also known as a support group. They also consist of volunteers who are skilled and allow the patients to come up with techniques to follow and deal with the condition.
Family therapy: As the name suggests, this therapy involves family members to help the patient cope up with mental illness. This is needed as a family member can support the patient and assure that things will work out.
