You are a middle-aged couple and hugging and kissing probably has now become an occasional thing. Get those habits back as hugging your partner everyday has many benefits. In fact, Dr Alka Chadha, Counsellor for Mental Health Improvement, Hope and Care Centre, Vashisuggests that hugging makes you happy, lowers your risk of various ailments and keeps you young.

According to a study published in the journal, Psychological Science, hugs from a trusted person helps relieve stress and also boosts immunity. A hug can also relieve mental stress and promotes blood flow to soft tissues and relaxes tensed muscles too. The pre-menopausal stage can be quite stressful. The hormonal changes, hot flashes, some nutrient deficiencies all lead to mood swings and physical as well as mental stress. Sometimes the pre-menopausal stage can be even more troublesome due to the sexual changes too. A partner s support is essential for a woman during the pre and post menopause stage.

According to a study[1] published in the Biological psychology journal, frequent hugs by a partner can lead to higher oxytocin level in women. Oxytocin or the love hormone will help combat the issues due to hormonal changes and thereby reduce stress. Oxytocin is also known to reduce anxiety, says Dr Anitha Anchan. The warmth of the partner s hug also showed lower blood pressure readings in the women subjects.
