We only talk about menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, staining when it comes to discussing menstrual problems. But in reality, there are a lot of things that a woman faces when on periods; one of them is vaginal itching. And this is the last thing you want to be bothered with. But there are times when you can t help neither can you itch down there nor can you ignore the problem. During my teens, I faced this issue of vaginal itching during periods one too many times. This was when a friend of mine suggested using a homemade vaginal wash to keep the area clean and minimise episodes of vaginal itching.

It is not like I haven t used a natural vaginal wash before during my teen's vaginal itching even without being on my periods was common for me using baking soda and lukewarm water always helped me to wade through the problem, but during periods it didn t help much. Vaginal itching during periods has a lot of reasons and was not just a hygiene or hormonal thing, though we cannot avoid them altogether. There could be various reasons for vaginal itching during periods residual blood, inflammation in the vaginal area, yeast infection, allergic reaction to sanitary pads, etc.

During periods here are two tried and tested homemade vaginal wash that you can try to counter vaginal itching:

Yoghurt: Use homemade yoghurt if you want to use it as a vaginal wash and don t rely on the store bought ones. Take two to three spoons of yoghurt mix with water and wash the entire area thoroughly. Wash till your anus to make sure there aren t any bacterial remnants because even bacteria remaining in those areas can lead to infections in the vaginal area. During periods, while use this wash to clean the vaginal area first and then clean with normal water before wearing the pad.

Since yoghurt is a probiotic it helps to maintain the pH balance of the area. After periods if you still have the problem of vaginal itching apply this wash or apply yoghurt directly and keep it for some time. It helps to treat yeast infections and banish vaginal odour too.

Lemon leaves: This might be little difficult to get as you don t get lemon leaves on the market as easily as lemons, but if you can get a handful it will be of great help. Lemon leaves have anti-microbial and antibiotic properties which help to maintain the acidic pH of the vagina and prevent infection and symptoms like itching or burning during periods. Boil a few leaves in a pan or a vessel cool the mixture down to room temperature and use it to wash your vagina area.
