Preparing for your wedding is stressful - not only mentally but also physically. You spend a lot of time outside either shopping, visiting friends and family. You invariably end up eating what you might not have wanted to. You might also be on a strict diet to lose those last few kilos and this could cause acidity. And the result is an upset stomach on your wedding day!

It is one of the most common stomach problems experienced by people during their wedding day. Acidity can be caused due to fasting, untimely eating of food and gorging on spicy foods. Hence, as your wedding day nears, the following are recommended

  • Stay away from spicy and oily or fatty foods and red meat. These foods lower the digestion process and might trigger acidity.
  • Avoid coffee and tea, aerated drinks and citrus fruits as they might trigger irritation of intestinal lining when taken on empty stomach.

  • Consume boiled vegetables and easy-to-digest foods.
  • Drink cold milk as it neutralises excess acid in stomach.

Indigestion

Wrong eating habits and stress are common causes of indigestion that lead to accumulation of food contents in the stomach and a feeling of uneasiness. To prevent indigestion during your wedding, follow these effective tips -

  • Eat in smaller portions as excess eating in some cases cause indigestion.
  • Never eat foods that are kept outside the refrigerator, especially milk products.
  • Always eat warm food and fresh fruits.
  • You can consume curd or smoothies after meals as they help in combating indigestion.

Heartburn/Acid reflux

If you follow unhealthy eating patterns or consume junk food, the chances of acid located in the stomach entering the esophagus is high. This leads to a burning sensation or pressure in the chest and burping, signifying acid reflux. All you need to do to avoid this stomach problem is -

  • Avoid eating excessively, even when you are hungry, as it might lead to heartburn.
  • Stay away from high-fat foods, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate and citric acid.
  • Maintain a regular eating and sleeping cycle.
  • Do not lie down until three hours after eating.
  • Drink water more as it keeps you hydrated but avoid drinking water during meals.

Diarrhoea and vomiting

There are cases when people suffer from diarrhoea or vomiting on their wedding day due to unplanned eating or drinking contaminated water. Here are few tips to avoid occurrence of these health complications on your D-day

  • If you are allergic to any food (or milk), stay away from those foods.
  • Load up nutrients and vitamins, as diarrhoea might cause loss of water and electrolytes from the body.
  • Drink boiled water or lemon juice and honey to stay hydrated.
  • Eat warm, light and easy-to-digest foods.
  • Wash your hands properly before eating to minimise the risk of other stomach illness.

Food poisoning

  • Do not eat outside (especially roadside stalls) as they might be prepared in unsanitary conditions.
  • Microwave your food properly and cook in sanitary conditions.
  • Eat freshly cooked food and wash fruits properly before eating them.
  • Wash your hands before every meal and after using the washroom.
  • Do not eat leftovers and pre-cut fruits which are kept in open for a long time.
  • Drink boiled and filtered water and stay away from caffeinated drinks.
