Autism Awareness Month: Autism or autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, considered to be one of the most common developmental disabilities whose symptoms usually appear at the age of 9 months. With timely screening and diagnostic tools, however, a large number of children are diagnosed by the age of three. It is the need of the hour to dispel myths surrounding autism and improve one's quality of life. According to Dr Deepak Ugra, department of paediatrics at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, there are mainly four common myths surrounding autism spectrum disorder that need to be addressed. Read on to find out more.
Fact: "It is a known fact that autism is a lifelong developmental disorder. Though signs and symptoms are witnessed during childhood, autistic traits are also seen in adulthood. Shockingly, many adults tend to get diagnosed with this disorder even later in life," said Dr Ugra.
Fact: That children with autism are violent by nature is a misconception. The doctor said that while some children may find it difficult to express themselves they do not cause any harm. In fact, a majority of children with autism struggle to cope and manage their emotions, but they are not at all violent or a threat to others. Such children, he said, should be treated with love, respect, and empathy.
Fact: Autism affects people in different ways. While some may require additional support, others can be independent, follow their passion, and become successful in their respective careers. With the right support and resources, people with autism can grow, carve a niche for themselves, and create history, too, the doctor noted.
Fact: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may display intellectual disabilities or speech difficulties, but that is not the case with everyone. "Some people with autism can communicate properly without any fear. But, screen [time] is causing a lot of harm to children, so [limit it]," the doctor concluded.
