There are a lot of reasons for facial swelling in the morning. But most of them are harmless ones. However, if facial swelling is bothering you for a long time and your face is puffier than before it could be due to an allergic reaction, sinus, mums or other health issues. But early morning facial swelling usually isn t something to worry about. Here are a few reasons why you get facial swelling in the morning:

You slept the wrong way

The most common reason for facial swelling in the morning is due to the pressure of the pillow on your face that can lead to fluid build up. I know a lot of people who say that they don t use a pillow at night to sleep as it can make your face look puffier due to the fluid build-up. Here are reasons why you should always sleep on your left side.

Hormonal changes

For most women, hormonal changes trigger facial swelling in them which is more evident in the morning. Periods, menopause or even pregnancy can make a woman s face look fluffy. However, these changes settle once the hormonal cycle stabilises. In young girls or teenagers, facial swelling can also be evident pre-menstruation. Here are few things about a girl s first period that you should know.

Hangover

This is a major culprit, too much of alcohol at night can show up on your face. Sometimes, even having foods rich in salt (sodium) when paired with alcohol at night can lead to inflammation in the body and face. It is a known fact that excess sodium can lead to water retention in the body. Here are ways to counter a hangover like a pro.

Stress

If there is too much stress which increases cortisol levels this leads to inflammation throughout the body and of course it doesn t spare your face too. So a stressed person is more likely to have facial swelling in the mornings. Here are other things that happen to your body when you are stressed.
