You know your body best and by that we mean from the colour of blood in your stool to embarrassing farts and untimely loose motions these might be just a few of the stomach and colon related conditions you might be embarrassed to share. But when you go to a gastroenterologist, you must know these things. Dr. Sandeep Kulkarni, Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, Sahyadri Hospitals elaborates.

  1. A bleeding ulcer doesn't always need a major operation: In the past few years, there have been many advances in Endoscopic technologies. Now, cutting-edge technological implements can be used to seal the bleeding.
  1. Knowing and understanding the colour and consistency of the poop is important: Understanding bowel movements gives an insight into your gastrointestinal health. The colour of the stools is very important because they can indicate underlying health conditions or possible diseases. The following are abnormal stool colour types that one should be aware of.
  • Bright red stools indicate bleeding in the lower colon or near the anus
  • Blackish or dark red (Tarry) stools indicate bleeding in upper gastrointestinal tract
  • Silvery stools indicate obstruction &upper intestinal bleeding
  • White stool indicates lack of bile (biliary obstruction) in your stool. White stool is usually an indicator of jaundice as well.

A.Large volume stools indicate diarrhea with small bowel origin

B.Small volume but frequent stools indicate diarrhea with large bowel origin

  • Greasy stools indicate pancreatic disorders.
  1. Farting is totally a normal process: The stomach has gas forming bacteria. When there is bacterial overgrowth in the intestines or there is an imbalance between healthy & bad bacteria, it results in flatulence.
  2. Having irritated stomach lining might be because of allergic to gluten and fish that irritates the gut health: Gluten is found in wheat and other related grains such as barley, oats, and rye. Even things such as lipsticks can have gluten. Reports suggest that almost 1 in every 100 people suffer from gluten allergy in North India. Gluten allergies develop when the body s immune system becomes sensitized and overreacts to the gluten in the environment. The gluten irritates the stomach lining and results in nutrient deficiencies. These cause the following symptoms:
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loose motions, bloating and fullness
  • Anaemia or low haemoglobin
  • Joint pain
  • Stunted growth in children

Fish allergy can be catastrophic as well. Seafood allergies and allergies to nuts like peanuts, walnuts etc. can be immediately life threatening and dangerous. The allergies can cause Anaphylaxis (less common), a potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can cause the body to go into shock. However, the more common symptoms of fish and nuts allergy include:

  • Skin rash
  • Nausea, stomach cramps, indigestion, vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Stuffy or runny nose and/or sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Asthma
  1. Acid reflux and constipation can be solved without resorting to expensive, invasive tests or medication: Acid reflux is an occurrence where the acid produced by your stomach goes up into your oesophagus. This can cause symptoms such as burning chest pain called heartburn. The best way to combat acid reflux is by following the below steps:
  • Do not stay hungry
  • Have small, frequent meals
  • Consume at least 3-4 liters of water daily
  • Include high amounts of fibre in your diet
  • Avoid spicy and oily food as much as possible
  1. Understand the brain in your 'gut' health: Stress (or depression or other psychological factors) can affect movement and contractions of the GI tract. Some people with GI disorders experience pain more intensely than other people do because their brains do not properly adjust pain signals from the GI tract. The existing pain seems worse when a person is stressed.A few examples of mental conditions which are linked to our digestive system include:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition associated with significant psychological and psychiatric side effects, such as higher levels of anxiety or depression and suicidal ideation

Chronic levels of inflammation in the body also lead to psychosomatic disorders such as depression andhigh blood pressure.
