Tahira Kashyap's Breast Cancer Journey

Tahira Kashyap Khurrana has long been admired for her candidness about her breast cancer journey. Back in 2018, the writer-director was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer. At the time, she underwent a mastectomy and embraced her scars with courage and grace. She kept her fans posted about her health updates and also raised critical awareness about the disease. Her openness helped break the stigma surrounding breast cancer and brought visibility to the struggles many women face in silence.

Now, after 7 years, Tahira's post about her breast cancer relapse has not only highlighted her resilience but also served as a sobering reminder of how cancer can resurface even after years of remission. Her message emphasized the importance of listening to one's body and staying vigilant with health checks.

Cancer: Why Regular Screenings Is Crucial To Manage This Deadly Disease?

Writer and film director, Tahira Kashyap also stressed the value of regular health check-ups. In the post (above), she has mentioned how even 7 years the disease has returned back in her body and how regular screening helped her track it "... it's a perspective. I'd like to go with the latter and suggest the same for everyone who needs to get regular mammograms."

But before we understand the important of regular screening to tackle this deadly disease, lets take a look what what exactl is a breast cancer. In medical terminology, a breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the milk ducts or lobules of the breast. If not treated, these cells can spread to surrounding tissue and cause lumps or thickening.

Speaking to TheHealthSite.com, Dr Prithviraj Chouhan, Apollo Hospitals said, "Breast cancer is a life-threatening condition which can return even after years of recovery due to certain factors. When some cancer cells manage to survive despite treatment with radiation, chemotherapy, or hormonal therapy the cancer cells re-grows and makes a comeback. This is more likely when the tumor is already advanced at the time of diagnosis. Tumors that grow over time have more opportunity to develop genetic changes that help them resist standard treatments. This is why early detection improves the chances of a cure."

Tahira's case highlights that cancer isn't always a one-time battle, and that regular self-examinations, annual mammograms, and clinical checkups are vital to keep the condition under control. Read on to know what role regular screening plays -

Why Regular Screenings Matter

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women globally. In India alone, it accounts for around 14% of all cancers in women. Experts recommend that women above the age of 40 should undergo annual mammograms, while those with a family history of cancer may need to start even earlier or consider genetic testing.

Routine screenings help detect abnormalities long before symptoms arise. They are especially crucial for those who have previously battled breast cancer, as recurrence can occur in the same breast, the opposite breast, or in other parts of the body.

Early detection not only increases the likelihood of successful treatment but also reduces the severity of treatments needed, improving quality of life for patients.
