It may begin with itching around the groin or anus or abdominal pain which may seem casual, but hernia, if ignored can lead to complications. Surgery, obesity, weak muscles, constipation or birth defects are the leading causes of hernia, which has become a common ailment in individuals, especially males. Surgical removal of the protruding skin or bulge is the only treatment for hernia. Here s how you can identify hernia before it gets severe:

  • Visit the doctor if you feel a tender protrusion or bulge around the abdominal area, groin or anus.
  • Itching near the groin or anus can also indicate initial stages of hernia and can be prevented if you consult your physician in time.
  • Pain when passing bowels or blood spots near the rectum and stress in the abdomen followed by a feeling of nausea and vomiting are also signs of hernia. Ignoring rectal bleeding is not a good idea.
  • In case of hiatal hernia, which is near the upper abdomen, heartburn, and acid reflux are common.
  • A tiny protrusion in near the belly button, groin, abdomen or anus that is painful and firm can also indicate hernia.
  • Blood in stools accompanied by heavy constipation are early symptoms of abdominal hernia. Getting up and sitting down causes pressure on the abdomen and may lead to pain in the protruding skin too.
  • The protrusion disappears when you lie down and appears again when standing or applying pressure on the stomach. If you observe an increase in the size of the bulge, you must visit a doctor immediately.

There are several types of hernia but the symptoms are usually the same. There are reducible hernias too and the protrusion can be pushed inside if you do not delay your check-up.
