Dr Nilesh Shah, Group President, Scientific Services and Operations, Metropolis Healthcare* explains, 'The general incubation period of a swine flu virus is between three to seven days with more serious infections lasting about nine to 10 days. H1N1 flu signs and symptoms develop in one to three days in humans. If you belong to the high-risk group, you are at an increased risk of suffering from the condition.' Here is a list of people who are at risk of swine flu.

Kids: Children younger than 5 years of age, particularly those younger than 2 years have a higher chance of suffering from swine flu if any cases are reported in the community.

Senior citizens: If you are 65 years old or are older than 65 years, you might be at a risk of swine flu. Here are 15 precautions every Indian should take to prevent swine flu.

Pregnant women: Yes, pregnant women who are within the first two weeks of delivery are known to be at high risk of swine flu. Moreover, women who have had a miscarriage should also be wary of swine flu.

Diseased individuals: People suffering from chronic medical conditions, including asthma, emphysema, heart disease, diabetes, neuromuscular disease, kidney disease, liver disease or blood disease are at a high risk. So beware if you suffer from these conditions.

Immunocompromised patients: People who are immunosuppressed due to certain medications are also at a risk of swine flu. Also, if you suffer from HIV or have low immunity, it is wise to stay safe and follow preventive measures.

So if you belong to any of these groups and experience any symptoms for swine flu, then consult your doctor immediately. Do not self-medicate as it might worsen the condition and make it difficult to treat. On the other hand, one of the best ways to reduce the chance of contracting the influenza virus is through vaccinations. Talk to your doctor if you are at high risk of acquiring an infection (especially if you are travelling to a region that has recently reported cases to prevent it.
