Is it a good idea for heart patients to indulge in long adventurous journeys or road trips? This is certainly a valid question because you never know when your symptoms worsen. This is why it is extremely important to do your research before planning a trip. Taking precaution and staying well-informed is the safest way for any patient to enjoy the little pleasures of life. Dr. Abhijit Borse, Interventional Cardiologist at Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai says, "Travelling with heart disease requires extra planning and precaution, but it doesn't mean you have to miss out on exploring the world. There are a few things you must keep in mind such as: consulting your doctor before planning, maintaining a heart-healthy diet, not over-exerting yourself, packing smart and managing stress during the journey." Doctor elaborates more on these very points, let us dive deeper into them.
These tips will save your life and allow you to enjoy your trip freely:
Dr. Borse speaks on the importance of prior consultation with a cardiologist before embarking on a long journey. A doctor will provide accurate and personalised advice as per your condition and history, he or she will give you a set of essential medications in case of emergencies and for normal scenarios as well. He or she will ensure that you are physically fit to travel. If you are not, he or she will also communicate that to you without hesitation.
Dr. Borse says that, a person suffering from any heart disease must make sure to pack smart and travel smart. This is the key to not miss out on the adventures of life even when you are ill. Here are some tips: keep your medications in their original packaging so that it is easy to identify, carry your prescriptions along with them. Pack each prescription with the respective medicine, carry a letter from your doctor explaining your condition and medications in case of an emergency. Additionally, bring a list of emergency contacts, including your doctor's details, and identify hospitals and medical facilities near your destination.
Staying active while traveling is important, but it's equally important to listen to your body and avoid overexertion. Gentle activities such as walking, stretching, and swimming can be beneficial, but avoid strenuous activities that could put extra stress on your heart. Make sure to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and adjust your activities based on your energy levels and how you're feeling each day.
"Here's what you should do about your diet while travelling," says Dr. Borse. "Stick to the dietary restrictions as closely as possible, make a list of all the cuisines before journey, eat meals that are low in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and whole grains, to avoid the temptation of unhealthy options and be mindful of what you eat from outside."
The one thing that you should never do as a heart patient is overexert yourself or stress yourself out over unnecessary things. Even while planning you itinerary, Dr. Borse suggests that you include relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help manage stress. Always make sure to get enough rest and sleep.
Dr. Borse concludes by saying, "Traveling should be a source of joy and discovery, and with these tips, you can ensure your heart stays as healthy as your spirit is adventurous."
