This star-shaped spice is known for its distinct earthy, sweet and spicy flavour and fragrance, and is used in a variety of Indian dishes. In fact, it is a popular spice in most masala or curry spice mixes in India. Apart from imparting flavour and fragrance, star anise also has a variety of health promoting properties for both kids and adults. It is great for digestion and prevents flatulence [1].

How star anise helps?

The stomachic [2] properties of star anise relieve cramps and stomach aches. It also helps in stimulating digestion. It is also a carminative [2] and hence prevents the formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and reduces flatulence and bloating. It is used to treat excessive intestinal gas and colic in infants [3] too.

How to use star anise?

  • Star anise tea is commonly used to treat flatulence in both infants and adults. Add 2 to 3 pods of star anise to water and allow it to boil. Sip this tea for relief from gastric trouble and cramps.
  • Star anise can also be added to milk and boiled for flavour and digestion benefits.
  • Star anise is often chewed post meals as a mouth freshener and to aid digestion.
  • Alternatively, you can add it your soups and curries, the powdered form can be added to flavour desserts and even to the masala tea to incorporate the spice in your daily diet and keep gastric troubles at bay.
