Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre recently shared her daily dining ritual of eating dinner by 6:30 7:00 p.m., long before most family members sit down for their meals. She explained this choice candidly during a relaxed conversation with Farah Khan at her home, where Farah also shot a cooking segment featuring Bendre's favourite fried fish. Sonali said, "I eat my dinner at 6:30 7 p.m. After that, people eat, and if I have to sit with them, it's very unfortunate." Her humour struck a chord with Farah both agreed that staying away from late night feasting helps maintain a lighter, more mindful lifestyle.

Growing up as a Maharashtrian in an unsophisticated culinary landscape, according to Sonali, a pure daal-chawal diet day in and day out, the Behl family, which she married into, hosted by Punjabis, did not portray as a dull milieu with an ugly spread of quasi-chaste food. She remembered saying to herself that every day was a feast of weddings. Her mother in law, Madhu Behl, treated her to a more measured approach and indicated that a well-educated modern woman was capable of running a kitchen without cooking every day. She led the change in dieting towards healthier and steamed foods the whole family joined in the role, and Goldie Behl ditched vegetarianism for it as well.

From Scare to Strength: Sonali's Cancer Journey

As part of her diet revelation, Sonali also shared her cancer scare, having been diagnosed with metastatic (stage 4) cancer in July 2018 at age 43. She even openly described how the diagnosis, even with her healthy living, came as a surprise, and doctors predicted that she had a probability of survival of about 30% only.

First splitting into denial, Sonali experienced severe emotional distress. Much to her support, her husband, Goldie Behl, quickly got her an appointment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, and within a couple of days they flew there. At that period, the seriousness of cancer was like experiencing a Christmas tree with disease illuminated on her stomach in a PET scan.

She emphasised the necessity of awareness, early screening, and open discourse asserting that detecting cancer early can not only cure but even save lives.
