A new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics revealed a possible link between ultra-processed foods (UPF) and sleep disorders like insomnia. This association may be valid for almost one third of adults. The study revealed their findings after conducting a thorough analysis of sleep patterns and dietary patterns of people. One of the lead investigators from the Department of Medicine, Columbia University stated that, we have reached an age where eating an unhealthy ultra-processed diet and suffering from sleep problems are more prevalent than we ever predicted it to be. It is important to do a deep dive on how diet has an impact on sleep.

What Does Study Findings State?

Multiple researches have previously stated that a good diet is the foundation of good health and good sleep health as well. They recommend eating food rich in magnesium, protein, vitamins for good sleep. Some re4searchers even recommend a strict Mediterranean diet to prevent sleep-related disorders from cropping up. In this study, researchers observed people who consumed ultra-processed foods and the4n evaluated their health and sleep health. According to the findings, people who suffered from chronic insomnia were found to eat more UPF than healthy diet. The association of higher UPF intake and insomnia was evident in both males and females as per the study report. However, the risk seemed higher in males than compared to females. Most of the participants were getting their daily energy from UPF and at least 20 percent of them reported facing symptoms of insomnia.
