October 16 is World Spine Day

If your job involves sitting for long hours, you are undoubtedly at a high risk of various health complications. With software professional, call centre employees and even bank employees spending most of their time sitting, it is very important to understand the unhealthy amount of pressure it is exerting on your spine. So to lower your risk of spinal problems, here are some expert tips from Dr Yogesh Chopra, Senior Spine Specialist, Qi Spine Clinic.

Get up from your chair every 30 minutes: The longer you sit, the more you are at risk of suffering from spinal problems. So to keep your spine healthy, take a break every 30 45 minutes. You can either move your back sideways or stretch your back to ease the pressure on the muscles. Do it 4 5 minutes every time you take a break.

Incorporate spinal testing in your routine check-up: Most people go for a routine blood sugar or blood pressure check-up every once in a while. Similarly, you should also include spinal muscle testing as a part of this routine. Particularly if your job profile involves sitting or standing for long hours. It helps in the early diagnosis of deficiencies or spinal problems and thus, aids in timely treatment.

Correct your posture: Yes, maintaining a good posture is the key to keep your spine healthy. But according to Dr Chopra, Sitting in a good chair is equally important. A chair with a backward inclination of 100 to 110 degrees is ideal, as against the one with a backrest at 90 degree. Hence, ensure your chair is not stiff but has an inclination backwards.
