Most people believe that those suffering from acidity should avoid citrus fruits. However, is it not true, says Luke Coutinho, Holistic Nutritionist and Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine expert, Mumbai. One can eat citrus fruits even though it is acidic in nature because once ingested, it mixes with the saliva, which makes these fruits alkaline. And hence, these fruits do not interfere with acidity or worsen your condition. In fact, including citrus fruits in your diet can improve your condition and lower your risk of acidity. Here are 4 times when you should not eat citrus fruits.

Not just this, citrus fruits have numerous health benefits right from boosting your immunity to aiding the development of infants. The intake of foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, not only aids digestion, but also boosts immunity and helps in quick recovery from cold and flu. Eating citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime, grapefruit ad kiwi during pregnancy not only reduces the risk of allergies but also increases the intake of folic acid, which plays a key role in the development of the growing fetus. As citrus fruits are loaded with vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, it not only helps in eliminating the harmful free radicals from the body but also aids in improving your skin.

If suffering from acidity, it is wise to avoid fruit juices as it contains high levels of sugar and low levels of nutrients. In such a case, eat fruits rather than drinking fruit juices. Also, remember that all fruits should be consumed in the whole form to reap its benefits. And the right time to consume fruits is on an empty stomach (not citrus fruits) or as a mid-meal snack and avoid eating fruits post sunset.
