Many women dread their periods because of painful menstrual cramps. Dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps can significantly affect the quality of your life and some women are almost bed-ridden for the first couple of days of their period.

A study published in the Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal in 2015 found that consuming cinnamon during your period can result in significant reduction of pain, menstrual bleeding and also prevent any feelings of nausea or vomiting [1]. In this study, 76 female college students were divided into two groups. One group was given placebo capsules while the other were given capsules containing 420 mg of cinnamon. The parameters were then recorded in the group within the first 72 hours of their cycle.

The results revealed that the amount of menstrual bleeding was lower in the cinnamon group. Also, the women in the cinnamon group experienced lesser pain or menstrual cramps than usual. There were no side-effects in using this spice to fight menstrual pain and the researchers concluded that it is an effective herbal remedy for dysmenorrheal or menstrual cramps. How to use it

You can add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a glass of warm water twice or thrice a day depending on the severity of the pain. The warm water is also highly effective in soothing your stomach.
