Kidney disease: Diabetes damages blood vessels in the kidney as a result of which the kidney cannot filter waste efficiently, leading to kidney failure or irreversible damage.

We all know kidneys work to expel toxins and waste from our body. However, not many people know that any problems in the kidneys can have far-reaching effects on your health and well-being. Sometimes, some of the first signs and symptoms may not be directly kidney related and hence may go unnoticed. Dr Topoti Mukherjee, MD Medicine, DNB Nephrology, Fellowship in Transplantation (Canada), Consultant Nephrologist for DaVita, Mumbai sheds some light on this interesting topic. Raises your blood pressure: Not caring for your kidney function can lead to high blood pressure or hypertension and the opposite is true as well. There is a high prevalence of hypertension even at early stages of kidney disease because the if your blood pressure is high it affects the tiny tubules of the kidneys, causing them to malfunction. And if you have high blood pressure it affects our kidneys as well.

Saps you of essential electrolytes making you weak. : Your kidneys are responsible for maintaining the electrolyte balance in your body as their main function is to throw out toxins and maintain a the fluid levels in your body. When they malfunction it can lead to low levels of sodium (Na), potassium (K), and even acidosis (a condition where there is an increase in the acidity of your blood) — all of which can lead to fatigue and lethargy.

Makes you anaemic: Your kidneys are responsible for the production of a hormone that prompts your bone marrow to produce red blood cells. When your kidneys malfunction this production is significantly lowered which leads to fewer red blood cells in your blood — this can lead to anaemia. This can account for many symptoms and may also add to your cardiac risk and cardio-vascular related events.

Leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies: One of the biggest concerns of people with kidney disease or malfunctioning kidneys is the fact that they are very likely to suffer from nutritional abnormalities. This is because apart from filtering out toxins from your body, your kidneys are also responsible for the breakdown of molecules of protein so that the body can absorb it. Therefore, when your kidneys malfunction, your body tends to get lesser nutrition than it needs leading to vitamin, mineral and protein deficiencies.

Decreases your brain function: These are symptoms seen in people with advanced stage of kidney disease. The improper functioning of this organ can lead to neurological symptoms such as, cognitive decline, dementia, depression, sleep disturbances and peripheral nerve abnormalities are common.

Puts you at risk of heart failure: Because your kidneys are closely linked to your blood pressure it is also often a cause for heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, angina, arrhythmia, stroke and sudden death. In addition to the traditional cardiac risk factors in the general population, there are uremia (build-up of excessive urea in the blood) specific risk factors as well. In advanced stages, uremic pericarditis (build-up of urea in the outer covering of the heart) may present as one of the complications.

Leads to sexual abnormalities: Lowered kidney function can have an impact on your sex life too. Due to high blood pressure, fatigue and neurological deficits, malfunctioning kidneys can lead to conditions such as erectile dysfunction.

Increases your chances of bleeding uncontrollably: Caused due to the lack of red blood cells being formed in the body due to kidney disease.

Causes skin rashes and dryness: This is again a symptom that is seen largely in people suffering from advanced stages of kidney disease. Caused due to the lack of water and nutrients in the body, a patient will notice excessive dryness of the skin, rashes and itchiness especially on the soles of his/her feet.

Affects your thyroid function: Kidney dysfunction can lead to your thyroid gland also malfunctioning. This is one of the leading causes for hormonal imbalances.

What can you do to prevent kidney disease?

Most nephrologists agree that kidney screening is a must at regular intervals if you are at high risk for kidney disease. Early detection, prevention and care are the only solutions to avoiding medical complications as a result of improper kidney care.
