Relieves constipation

Milk of magnesia is a popular laxative and is used in prescribed doses for both adults and children to reduce fecal incontinence and constipation. Its properties also help get rid of flatulence. Studies[1] conducted in comparison with another effective laxative have proven that milk of magnesia is equally effective and does not pose any allergic effects in children. The magnesium ions in MOM help in absorbing water from the tissues surrounding the intestinal track, thereby easing the passage of faeces. Antacid

Milk of magnesia is a base and has a pH level of 10.5. This makes it an effective antacid[2]. When consumed in very little amounts, it reduces heartburns and acidity. It neutralises the excess acids in the stomach and provides relief to an upset stomach. It also combats gastric problems caused due to hyperchlorhydria [3]. Here s what you need to know about over the counter laxatives.

Acne treatment

Milk of magnesia has shown remarkable results in reducing the oiliness of the skin and preventing and reducing acne [4] [5]. When applied topically in small amounts, MOM reduces the inflammation and blemishes caused by acne and heal the skin. It is also used as a primer on the skin i.e. applied as a base on oily skin to prepare it for make-up. This primer prevents the make-up from cracking or breaking out during summers. The bad

Excessive and continuous use of milk of magnesia leads to bowel dependence and may even cause diarrhea. Hence, it is used to cure occasional constipation or as suggested by the doctor. Like most other acne products, using milk of magnesia may lead to dryness of skin in the long run. Hence, it must be used sparingly. Is your child suffering from diarrhea? Try these home remedies.

How to use

Milk of magnesia is administered orally as prescribed. The spoons or measuring cap to be used are provided with the product. Using tablespoons at home may alter proportions leading to side effects. For the skin, apply a light coat of MOM on your skin before make-up to prevent oiliness.
