Cause Of Localised Cholera Outbreak

It is suspected that the localised cholera outbreak occurred after drinking water came into contact with sewage due to cracks in pipelines, contaminating the water. The incident came to light on 12 November when a large number of people from the Paanch Pir Ni Wadi area of Dhoraji began falling sick.

Dr Vaibhav Goriya, District Epidemic Medical Officer of Rajkot told the media, "We were informed of the incident by doctors at the SDH on the same day. A team of doctors were deployed to the affected area and three persons tested positive for Cholera. A total of 47 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting have been reported till now, indicating a localised outbreak."

Tips To Protect Yourself From Localised Outbreak

A person may develop cholera, an acute diarrheal infection when they consume food or water contaminated by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that cholera is a global public health threat and to protect yourself from localised cholera outbreak, you must follow some basic rules.

  • Ensure to use and drink safe water, the CDC recommends to "use bottled, chlorinated, boiled, or filtered water" as "piped water, drinks sold in cups or bags, and ice may not be safe."
  • Always wash your hands before and after eating food, feeding children, using the toilet, and cleaning child's bottom. The CDC states, "If you don't have access to soap and safe water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol."
  • Keep your toilet clean and tidy using "soap solution to remove poop. Then disinfect using a solution of 1 part of household bleach to 9 parts of water."
  • Eat foods that are thoroughly cooked or fruits that you have peeled.
