Why are Indians unhappy?

According to a UN report, Indians ranks at 133 out of 156 countries in the happiness index.

According to a UN report, Indians rank 133 out of 156 countries in the happiness index. According to the World Happiness Index 2108, India ranks 133rd- a drop down of 11 positions since last year when India ranked 122.

Finland, topped the list by being the happiest country in the world. The Happiness index, is among the global list of 156 countries. Among the shockers was that India is far behind its neighbouring countries like Pakistan, China and Nepal.

We ask renowned consultant psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty, psychiatrist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai about what makes us an ‘unhappy’ population. ‘Quite honestly, Indians are still recovering with the insecurities about the west. In the sense that we are riddled with deep rooted insecurities. Moreover, the definition of ‘happiness’ is not clear- it is not the absence of pain, it is a byproduct of peace. That is how it should be understood,’ said Dr Shetty.

There is rapid globalization leading to rampant changes in terms of finance and emotions, explain experts. ‘There are too many changes happening around us, very swiftly. Anxiety is rising, just like depression and violence. Happiness is a byproduct of peace. Peace needs to come from within. If you ask me, as long as I have access to clean drinking water, enough trees, ample sunlight and a clean environment- I am all happy! However, these will take a long time to turn into actuality.’
