On Sunday night politician Priyanka Gandhi was admitted at Sir Gangaram Hospital and underwent a laproscopic gall bladder surgery on Monday morning. She is said to be recovering well and should be discharged by tomorrow. While there is no confirmed news as to why Priyanka Gandi was operated upon, the general reasons for a gall bladder surgery are gall stones or cholecystitis.
Gall stones is a condition where calcified stone-like structures form inside the gall bladder, and colecystitis is a sudden inflammation of the gall bladder. Both conditions can be immensely painful and in some cases life threatening. Laproscopic gall bladder removal (also known ascholecystectomy) is done to remove the gall bladder through several small cuts made in the abdomen. The surgeon inserts a scope with a small light and a video camera (laparoscope) into one incision near the belly button. He will then use a video monitor as a guide, and will insert a surgical instrument into another incision to remove the gall bladder. A patient is normally given general anesthesia for this surgery, which lasts for about 2 hours or less. After the gall bladder has been removed, the bile flows directly from the liver(where bile is produced) into the small intestine through the common bile duct.
Although this surgery has little or no risks, there are a few factors that might go wrong during a surgery, for example; infection at the incision sites, internal bleeding, the common bile duct might get damaged, injury to the small intestine and the risks associated with general anesthesia
