Diabetes is a chronic condition that is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Although, factors such as gender, age and ethnicity cannot be changed, lifestyle modifications like changes in your diet and leading an active lifestyle can prevent or decrease the risk of diabetes. One of the best and most effective measures to prevent type2 diabetes is to indulge in healthy snacks.
Snacks such as yoghurt, fruit, unsalted nuts, wholegrain foods and fruits that are low in glycemic index (GI) are not only good for your health, but they also lower your risk of diabetes. Avoid consuming unhealthy snacks like processed and ready-to-eat foods as they are high in sugar, salt and saturated fats. Include as much fresh fruit, dry nuts and dairy products in your diet as you like. You can experiment with different foods but eat regularly and in smaller portions so that your blood sugar levels are well under control.
It is important to choose your snacks wisely as most people put on weight and increase their risk of diabetes by eating unhealthy snacks. Opt for foods that are low in calories, high in fibre and contain healthy essential nutrients. Also, keep a track of your carbohydrate intake during your snack time, so as to maintain good health and prevent diabetes.
