Today on World Cancer Day, Goa Chief Minister (CM) Manohar Parrikar took to his Twitter account to convey a very thoughtful message. He tweeted, Human mind can overcome any disease #WorldCancerDay. Undoubtedly, this tweet and his recent appearance at the Goa assembly to present the budget shows his willpower and strong mind.

The 63-year-old Parrikar is suffering from a pancreatic cancer and is admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi since February. According to sources at AIIMS, he is under the observation of oncologist Atul Sharma and his condition is stable.
What is pancreatic cancer all about?
It is a deadly disease that occurs in the pancreas (a gland located in the abdomen that controls blood-sugar levels) when cells in this organ grow and divide abnormally without any control and form a tumour. If you are suffering from this disease, you will experience symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, change in stool, diarrhea, weight loss, and jaundice. Notably, pancreatic cancer is hard to diagnose as our pancreas is located deep in the abdomen and its symptoms are not always obvious. In fact, they develop gradually.
Pancreatic cancer is more common in older people and researchers still don t know the exact cause behind it. However, they inform about some of the risk factors including tobacco use, obesity, workplace exposure to certain chemicals, and inherited genetic syndromes associated with it. According to doctors, there is no known way to prevent this serious disease. However, to treat the condition, oncologists use ways like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care (specialized medical care for people with a serious illness). Notably, surgery is done with an aim to cure the disease while radiation and chemotherapy are often given together to slow pancreatic cancer's growth. Palliative care, on the other hand, is used to reduce the discomfort of patients who condition cannot be cured.
