Open-angle glaucoma – causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention

Open-angle glaucoma is the common type of glaucoma that affects people. Here are few things you need to know about it.

EyeOpen-angle glaucoma also called chronic or primary glaucoma is one of the most common types, accounting for around 90% of all cases of this eye condition. It is a heredity condition and people of African ancestry are found to be at a greater risk of this disease. This clinical condition is caused by gradual clogging of the drainage canals in the eye thereby increasing the pressure and resulting in damage of the optic nerve. The disease is called open-angle glaucoma is called so because the angle between the iris and cornea is wider than normal. This is a lifelong condition that progresses slowly and hence, people suffering from this condition show no symptoms till the damage is very severe. The vision loss generally starts from the sides (periphery) then slowly progresses to advanced glaucoma leading to blindness. How can it be detected and treated?

Through regular eye checkups, your ophthalmologist can detect the type of glaucoma and recommend  treatment options accordingly. In case of open-angle glaucoma, eye-drops are normally prescribed. Read more about medications to treat glaucoma

Can open-angle glaucoma be prevented?

No, open-angle glaucoma cannot be prevented as it shows no signs or symptoms in most of the cases. But here are few measures which can help you avoid the ailment: 

  • Adults above 40 years of age and individuals in the high risk category should have a complete eye exam once in a year.
  • Regular eye-checkups can help in early detection and treatment of open-angle glaucoma.
