Suffer from ‘technology posture’? Here are 3 changes you need to make in 2018 while using gadgets

We had never imagined that a mobile phone could become such an integral part of our lives, let alone see it as a health hazard. But here we are, probably reading this article on a mobile phone screen with a bent neck, strained spine and a stoop, absorbing Wifi signals that damage sperm count, according to research. We can ascribe most of our health problems to electronic gadgets. It s not surprising how everybody complains of headaches, bad posture and neck pain these days. Since all of us need an intervention for gadget addiction, celeb nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar has some tips that you can follow this year to reduce screen time and regain your health and happiness. The human head is heavy and we have spent months as babies learning to stabilise it. In a neutral position, with the ears above the shoulders, the head weighs about 5-6 kg. But then when you tilt 15 degrees downwards, it weighs more than double – about 15 kgs. At 30 degrees, it s 20kg and at 60 degrees, it s as much as 30 kgs. Most of us want to get rid of fat from our stomach, sport flatter abs and have narrow waists, but it s impossible with all that slouching and technology posture as it is called. The technology posture is much more harmful to people dealing with diabetes, heart conditions and other hormonal issues like PCOD, PCOS and thyroid. It interferes with the proper functioning of our adrenal glands and hampers cardio-respiratory processes too.

So from this week, take the first step to develop a strong back, flat stomach and a tall stance. This is what I want you to do –

1. When eating meals, have no gadgets around. Start doing this with 1 meal a day and over the next 10 weeks, do it during all 3 main meals per day.

2. Before going to bed, don t use any gadget for 30 minutes. Don t delay bedtime, just keep the phone away, switch off your TV and read a book (not on Kindle or iPad).

3. When you use the phone in the day, check for your posture. The correct way is to lift the phone at eye level and not to tilt the neck down. Good posture can make you more confident.
