Ayurveda has a wide range of massages targeted towards healing certain ailments and providing overall relaxation to the body too. While Abhyangam, the traditional Ayurveda massage, tones and rejuvenates your entire body, there are several types of kizhis (potlis or herbal concoctions tied in cloth bolus) that are used during massage to address other health issues. Dr Pashmin Ansari, Manager at the Kairali Ayurveda Treatment Centre, Vadodara shares with us the benefits of Navara kizhi and how it is performed:

What is Navara Kizhi?

Navara kizhi also known as Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda is a type of massage that provides strength to the muscles and re-energizes your body. The milk and herbs concoction used in this massage is also used to heal certain ailments. A special type of brown rice is cooked along with milk and herbs and then kizhis are prepared with it and used during the massage. The bolus or potlis are rubbed on the body during massage to generate heat which provides relief to the stiff and swollen muscles. Read: Panchakarma the different aspects of Ayurveda treatments.

How Navara Kizhi helps?

The Navara kizhi induces sweat (hence termed as Sweda in Sanskrit) and helps heal pain from various joint ailments, reduces stiffness of joints and prevents swelling too. It is an ideal treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, myalgia and lower back pain. In most conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, where use of oil on the body is not permitted, the milk and herb concoction is an ideal alternative. The herbal concoction provides nourishment to the degenerated tissues and prevents further depletion. It is often recommended for those suffering from neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diseases, varicose veins, sciatica and cervical problems.

The Navara kizhi is also known to pacify all the three doshas namely Vata, Pitta, and Raktha. It improves blood circulation while soothing your nerves and provides complete relaxation too. The treatment is also known to make the skin more lustrous and improving its texture.

Who should not opt for Navara Kizhi?

If you suffer from fractures or severe inflammations, Navara kizhi must be avoided. High blood pressure and diabetes mellitus patients may need a consultation before the massage and supervision during it.
