Mpox or monkeypox is a viral disease that has been spreading in many countries across the world. There are two strains that have been causing the viral disease: mpox Clade 1b and mpox Clade II. The first case of mpox was recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where thousands have died or been infected. The main origin country is DRC after which the disease spread to many other parts of the African subcontinent. In 2024, many non-African countries have also recorded this viral disease. Due to the potential threat posed by the new strains of mpox the World Health Organisation on August 14th, 2024 declared it as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). As more and more non-African countries report cases of mpox, its threat continues to grow and experts say that cautious measures must be followed so as to avoid another pandemic.

African Countries That Recorded Mpox Cases In 2024

Number of mpox cases reported across the African subcontinent as per WHO:

  1. Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): DRC recorded 6,169 confirmed cases and 25 deaths. Majority of the infection and deaths were from this country.

  12. Rwanda: 59 confirmed cases and no deaths.
  13. Zambia: At least 1 confirmed case.
  14. Mozambique: At least 1 confirmed case.

Non-African Countries That Recorded Mpox Cases in 2024

Number of mpox cases reported across non-African countries as per WHO:

  8. Pakistan: At least 1 confirmed case
  9. Thailand: At least 1 confirmed case
  10. United States of America: At least 1 confirmed case (linked to traveler from Africa)

As per the data presented above, the spread of mpox infection has occurred primarily within the African countries and the number of death cases are also from that region. However, one should not ignore the signs of spread of this infection beyond the African borders. Mpox spread has been reported on a global scale this year and among them the DRC remains the most affected. WHO still terms this disease as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) due to its nature, varying new strains and rate of spread.
