What Is A Stroke?

A stroke is a medical condition that occurs when something blocks the blood supply to the parts of the brain or when tiny blood vessels in the brain rupture. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 15 million people annually suffer from a stroke worldwide.

"The brain controls our movements, stores our memories, and is the source of our thoughts, emotions, and language. The brain also controls many functions of the body, like breathing and digestion," the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains. "To work properly, your brain needs oxygen. Your arteries deliver oxygen-rich blood to all parts of your brain. If something happens to block the flow of blood, brain cells start to die within minutes, because they can't get oxygen. This causes a stroke."

Healthcare professionals warn that a stroke can leave a lasting negative impact such as brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. There are two types of stroke: Ischemic stroke and Hemorrhagic stroke.
