The monsoon brings relief from the scorching summer heat and makes everything around bright and beautiful. However, it is also the season when many people complain of bacterial and fungal infections. The rapid increase in humidity makes it a perfect condition for bacteria and fungus to thrive. They can affect various parts of the ear like the inner ear, middle ear and the external ear. The infection in the ear can also be caused by flu or cold and allergies. Often, at times, these conditions cause swelling and congestion in the middle ear and nasal passage. As the accumulation of fluid increases in the middle ear, infection occurs. The incidences of ear infections can increase six to ten times during the monsoon season.

CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS DURING THE MONSOON

One of the most common causes of bacterial infection in the ear is throat infection. Exposure to rain may cause bacterial throat infection which can quickly spread out to the Eustachian tube. This tube connects the throat to the ear. Fungal infection, on the other hand, can spread through external sources or grow in the ear. When the weather is humid, fungus grows on clothes or surfaces, which can spread from the fingers to the ears. Fungus growth is also enhanced by the humid weather when there is earwax or dead skin present in the ear.

  • Keep your ears clean. Avoid inserting anything into the ears. Also dry your ears with a clean cloth after taking a bath.
  • Clean your Bluetooth devices and earphones with disinfectants to prevent any type of infections in the ear.
  • Apply ear drops only after consultation with an ENT specialist.
  • Avoid sour foods during the monsoons.
  • Check your ears for earwax. Instead of cleaning them at home, it is a good idea to visit the doctor to clean the ears.
  • Do not insert cotton swab in the ears as it may trap bacteria and lead to infection.
  • If there is any pain or discomfort in the ear, a doctor's checkup is necessary without any delay.

Ear health forms an integral part of daily hygiene. To avoid any sort of infections, it is always crucial to keep the ears dry and clean. Routine checkups with an ENT specialist can also go a long way in keeping the ears healthy and free from any infections.
