Michael Ray Richardson, a four-time NBA All-Star who faced a ban from the league due to drug use, passed away on Tuesday in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the age of 70. It has been reported that he was experiencing health problems for some time. According to the reports, he died shortly after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. His demise has since made people focus back on the disease that affects millions of men in the world, particularly those over 50. Prostate cancer tends to develop silently, and this is the reason why timely observation of the symptoms can result in saving lives.

Why Prostate Cancer Often Goes Unnoticed?

Prostate cancer in the male reproductive system is formed in a small organ, the prostate gland. The disease may not involve any pain and observable problems in the initial stages. Most men only discover that something is not right when cancer begins to grow or even spread. It is this silence which makes awareness important. Making frequent health checkups will enable the disease to be detected at earlier stages, at which it will be treated with ease.

Prostate Cancer Warning Signs

Here are the symptoms that men should not overlook, highlighting why early check-ups are important.

Changes in urination that signal trouble

A change in urinary discharge is one of the most prevalent early-phase symptoms of prostate cancer. Some red flags are:

  1. Weak or slow urine flow
  2. Urinating frequently, especially at night
  3. Pain during urination or burning
  4. Feeling the bladder is not empty after urinating

Blood in urine or semen

The presence of blood in urine or semen is always an indicator of alarm. It should not be neglected even in case it occurs once. This symptom is not always an indicator that one has cancer, although it can be an indicator that one is in a serious problem that requires immediate treatment.

Lower back pain, hip or pelvic pain.

Growing or spreading prostate cancer can lead to pain in the hips, lower back, thighs or pelvis. This agony may be either dull or chronic. It can be confused with muscle strain; however, when discomfort is not relieved, it is best to check the medical state.

Erectile difficulties

Difficulty in obtaining or sustaining an erection can be associated with several health disorders, such as prostate cancer. It is even more significant when this issue manifests together with other specifics, such as the change in the urine workflow, and it is necessary to consult a doctor.

How Racial Factors Affect Prostate Cancer Risk?

Speaking to Dr Ashok Kumar Vaid, Padma Shri Awardee, Chairman of Oncology, Medanta Medicity, the doctor said, "This disparity is mainly seen in Western countries and is not the same in our population. The difference in risk among black men is linked to their body structure and genetic makeup, which are not similar to ours. Patterns of many diseases, including prostate and breast cancers, vary between races. In those regions, prostate cancer can appear earlier and may behave more aggressively."

Early evaluation of prostate changes can be detected by a simple blood test known as PSA and a physical examination. Physicians might recommend annual screening of men in the high-risk group. However, one should consult a doctor if the symptoms persist or become severe.
