Measles cases in America have surged dramatically this year, with 11,313 cases being reported and 23 deaths occurring in more than 10 countries as of mid-September. Taking into account its latest data on measles in the Americas region, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reveals that measles in the region has increased by 31-fold as compared to the 2025 report.

Imported Cases Of Measles

The sudden escalation of measles cases in America led the PAHO to call for action, stating that one of the best ways to prevent the spread of this viral infection is through the vaccine, a disease that was once eradicated from the region. According to reports, cases of measles in America were driven largely by imported cases and spread through the local communities among individuals with low vaccine coverage.

Among the countries that have been affected by the highly infectious disease, Canada is identified as the worst hit, with 4,849 positive cases and one death. Closely followed by Mexico, accounting for 4,553 cases, including 19 deaths. The United States of America shares a similar burden with the previous two countries with positive cases surging up to 1,454, including three deaths.

Canada In The Top 10 List Of Measles Cases

The resurgence of the highly contagious illness has shaken the confidence of Canada in its long-standing status of eliminating measles from the country three decades ago. Researchers point fingers at the decline in vaccination coverage in recent years for the widespread outbreak of measles in Canada.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also marked Canada among the top 10 list with the highest number of measles cases.

What Is Measles?

Measles is an airborne virus that is considered one of the world's most infectious diseases, which can be fatal if left untreated. A person who is infected by the virus that causes measles may notice symptoms such as widespread rash and flu-like symptoms. It can also make someone severely ill to the extent of brain inflammation and pneumonia.

Signs And Symptoms Of Measles

The CDC states that measles symptoms, such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes and rashes may appear between 7 to 14 days after contact with the virus. Children under 5 who get contracted by measles can show life-threatening symptoms like ear infection, diarrhoea, pneumonia and encephalitis.

Who Is At Risk?

Anyone who is not protected against the highly infectious illness is at risk of contracting measles. It can be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes and the virus enters the body of a healthy person. You can also develop the contagious illness in less than 2 hours just by being in the room with an infected person.

Tips To Prevent Measles

According to the CDC, the best way to protect yourself from the outbreak of measles is by getting the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The US health agency claims that two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
