It has often been said that the body communicates when it is suffering from underlying health issues. The signs can be subtle or apparent, depending on the severity of the health situation. As such, when you notice something different or strange about the way your body is behaving, reach out to a doctor immediately for a timely and accurate diagnosis. The liver, for instance, is one of the organs that can scream for help by displaying some tell-tale signs. It happened to a patient recently, whose skin has started to turn yellow; there were other serious symptoms, too, which indicated problems with the liver. The 50-year-old man from Malad, Mumbai was treated by a team led by Dr Imran Shaikh, consultant GI and HPB surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. According to a statement shared by the hospital, the patient had a massive liver cyst that measured over 18 cm and contained 2.2 litres of fluid. The cyst occupied nearly 70 per cent of the liver. It had started to compress his vital organs, causing jaundice. As such, he needed urgent and complex surgical intervention. Read on to know more about the case.
The patient, who once led a cheerful and active life, had started to grapple with discomfort and uncertainty, because the pain and yellowing of his skin intensified. Initially, it all started as a mild issue, about which he did not think much. But later, it became a cause for concern, leading to him seeking medical attention. Little did the patient know back then that these symptoms were the result of a rare and life-threatening condition resulting from a massive cyst in his liver. He was admitted to Wockhardt Hospitals with 'alarming' symptoms of jaundice and discolouration of his skin.
Dr Shaikh said that the patient had no prior medical history of liver issues. He had been living a normal life until the cyst began to cause discomfort and jaundice. An investigation -- including ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans -- confirmed the rare condition, with the cyst threatening to rupture. It could have led to complications such as severe bleeding and sudden death!
"This was a highly challenging case due to the size of the cyst and its impact on the surrounding organs. The benign cyst had grown to replace almost 70 per cent of the liver and was causing compression on the bile duct, leading to jaundice. While hepatic cysts are relatively common, cases like this -- where the cyst grows to such an enormous size and causes symptoms -- are extremely rare, accounting for less than 1 per cent," the doctor stated. He added that the man was scheduled to undergo a 'laparoscopic partial resection' of the cyst with 'drainage of content and decomposition of the bile duct'.
In short, it was a major surgery.
"The surgical procedure was complex due to the risk of intraoperative bleeding and postoperative bile leaks. The 2.2-litre cyst, however, was removed without complications. After two hours of surgery, the patient responded well to treatment and was discharged in five days. He is now on the path to recovery, and will require regular follow-ups to monitor his liver function. But, he is expected to lead a normal life hereon," Dr Shaikh said.
