Men's Reproductive Health: Men are often put at the bottom of the hierarchy when it comes to having conversations about their reproductive health. There are still comparatively more conversations about menstruation, ovarian cancer and other challenges related to female reproductive health than problems like erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.
Even though these reproductive health challenges are as normal as banal ones like a headache or fever. There are still constraints to their discussions that lead to their lack of awareness among the people and males, specifically. This leads to discomfort and frustration that often result in having an uncomfortable sexual or intimate relationship.
To break this barrier, in this article, we will highlight the top reproductive health issues that a man may suffer from. The third one is uncommon and rare.
These five reproductive health problems lead the charge when it comes to male sexual health:
It is a condition when a man ejaculates semen that has comparatively less sperm than usual, the person is considered to have a low sperm count. This particular condition is often referred to as oligospermia, where there is a lower sperm count than usual, whereas a condition of having a zero sperm count is known as azoospermia. There are a variety of factors that cause it, from habitual to genetic. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, direct heat to the groin, and excessive intercourse are all known to contribute to a low sperm count.
Testicular cancer is cancer that develops in a man's testicles. While there is awareness about ovarian and breast cancer, this male cancer never makes it to the dining table conversation. There are several indications of testicular cancer like a lump, or swelling in a testicle, discomfort in a testicle or even in the scrotum, enlargement of a testicle, and an aching sensation in the lower abdomen, back, and/or groin area. It should be noted that these symptoms do not necessarily indicate testicular cancer but can also indicate another disease. A report shows that it affects about 1 in 250 males, and is more prevalent in young adults, particularly those between 15 and 35 years old, the exact cause being unknown.
This less-known condition occurs when fibrous scar tissue forms inside the penis often known as Peyronie's disease. This results in erectile dysfunction that causes a man's erection to curve which is often painful and can be caused by an unexpected injury to the penis but, not all cases of Peyronie's disease are a result of an injury.
Necessarily, a male hormone that has major effects on a man's physical and mental health. Testosterone affects a man's libido, as well as his muscles and bones, by maintaining their strength. The symptoms may include erectile dysfunction, low libido, and sexual discomfort, This can be caused by direct internal disruptions, but other things like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure can be the indirect causes.
It happens when men fail to achieve or maintain an erection during intercourse, which results in poor libido. A consistent erectile dysfunction can be a serious concern and needs medical help, whereas an irregular erectile dysfunction can be cured by making some lifestyle changes. Obesity, high cholesterol and even diabetes can cause impotence. Studies have shown that men who had traumatic childhood sexual experiences are more prone to having erectile dysfunction. The condition becomes more challenging because of societal mental constraints that associate shame with a serious medical condition.
Several male reproductive health issues go unreported because of the unhealthy mindset that people associate with masculinity, but it is crucial to talk and seek help at the right time or not when it is too late.
So, from now on, let's talk more about what a man may face when it comes to reproductive health, and give these severe issues some light.
