World Malaria Day 2024 is observed on April 25th every year and is an international event to raise awareness about malaria and bring the global community's attention to the fight against it. This year, under the theme "Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world," the World Health Organization (WHO) calls for ending discrimination and stigma that heighten the risk of malaria.
Personal Protection
Apply insect-repellent creams on the skin and clothes, especially DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide).
Use mosquito-repellent coils and vaporizers.
Sleep under bed nets treated with insecticide.
Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours
Repair broken screening on windows and doors
These are some ways people can protect themselves from mosquito bites:
Travel precautions: Travelers to regions where malaria is endemic should take the necessary personal protective measures, such as applying insect repellent, sleeping under bed nets, and taking antimalarial medication as directed by their physician. The medication must be taken several days before travel, as well as during and following it, depending on the duration of the stay in the malaria-endemic region.
Health education: People can educate themselves and their communities about the signs and symptoms of malaria, how to prevent the disease, and how important it is to get medical attention right away if they think they may have the disease.
Seek Early diagnosis. If you are in a malaria-prone area and experience symptoms like fever, chills, and headache, seek medical help immediately. If diagnosed early, malaria can be treated quickly without any complications.
Adherence and treatment completion: Those diagnosed with malaria should follow the recommended treatment plans to guarantee a full recovery and lower the chance of transmission to others.
Environmental Management
Equally important is keeping our surroundings clean and ensuring there is no stagnant water, which facilitates the breeding of female anopheles mosquitoes responsible for malaria transmission.

Check your surroundings - indoors and outdoors, for sources of stagnant water, such as puddles, open containers, coconut shells, clogged gutters, unused tyres, and unprotected water storage containers.
Make sure your property has adequate drainage to avoid standing water buildup.
Tightly cover the water storage containers, such as barrels or tanks, to prevent mosquitoes from accessing the water to lay eggs.
If you have a swimming pool, ensure it is frequently cleaned of debris and adequately chlorinated to discourage mosquitoes from growing in the water.
Refrain from overwatering lawns and plants, which can lead to mosquito breeding grounds.
