Leprosy in IndiaYou may be surprised to learn that leprosy, one of the most anciently documented diseases, is still affecting people. India alone has one million cases of leprosy, which is more than half the worldwide total. Also Read - World Leprosy Day 2020: A few facts about this much-misunderstood disease and tips for patients

The stigma attached to the disease is one of the reasons why it is still rampant. Often, people who show symptoms of the disease are afraid to seek medical help because of the social ramifications attached. They could face losing their family, home, and job, as well as their social status and the ability to earn an income. Those suffering from Leprosy are often ostracized from their homes and communities, often spend their lives in colonies, isolated from the rest of the world.

Fear and misunderstanding surrounding leprosy is another major cause. People don’t realize that with regular screening, a patient can be cured before permanent effects take place. Also Read - What a doctor wants you to know about leprosy in India

Organizations throughout the world, and specifically in India, have a mission to help people who are affected by leprosy. One of these organizations is Rising Star Outreach. Their mission is to assist those suffering from the effects of leprosy, by creating thriving and self-sufficient communities. They provide medical care, assistance in starting businesses, and education for children. They also have a mobile medical unit which provides medical care to those unable to travel. Bringing medication to those who need it is another big challenge in the fight against leprosy. This disease cannot be beaten if those who contract it are unable to receive care. This holistic approach is giving people hope, self confidence, and the ability to once again function as members of society. More knowledge and education about Leprosy, paired with hard work of global citizens and in-country care, will put us on the path to a world without leprosy. This disease no longer needs to be feared. Leprosy does not need to be a socially devastating illness; a cure is available.
