Your gums should always appear firm, pink and not swollen. Yes! Many of us face problems -- swollen, inflamed and red bleeding gums which can be often embarrassing! Teeth can loosen out the gums are weak as the gums are the shield of your teeth. Follow these tips listed by Dr Priya Chavan for marinating healthier gums!

Dos:

Brush your teeth twice every day. After brushing, take a small amount of toothpaste and massage it on your gums in a circular motion.

Use a water flosser to remove the food stuck between your teeth. Be gentle and see to it that your gums don't bleed after doing so.

Look for recession and tenderness in your gums. If you find any signals regarding the same then, seek medical advice.

Limit the intake of sugary and fizzy drinks which can disturb your oral health.

Visit your dentist at regular intervals.

Don't:

  • Don't use alcohol based mouthwash. Use of mouthwash will only mask the odour. The problem lies in the teeth and gums. See a dentist and not a pharmacist for OTC product.
  • While brushing, your toothbrush should be at 45-degree angle to the teeth not gums because you are supposed to brush your teeth and gums.
  • Do not include abrasive tooth powders in your daily regime of oral care.
  • Do not brush immediately after meals. Wait for at least half an hour. Drink some water before you brush your teeth.
  • Do not scrub your gums with salt or clove powder in case of tenderness in the gums.
