Pain during intercourse is not something that must be ignored. It is the body's way of signalling that something is not right. While it may or may not relate to fertility, it does warrant medical attention, says a doctor.

Many people experience excruciating pain during intercourse, which is medically known as 'dyspareunia'. Even though it is a common concern that affects millions of individuals, it continues to be a topic shrouded in mystery. It can be a particularly distressing experience for couples trying to conceive. But, is pain during intercourse necessarily a sign of infertility? According to Dr Pallavi Prasad, a fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Basaveshwara Nagar, Bengaluru, while pain during intercourse is not a direct sign of infertility, it can point to underlying health conditions that can affect reproductive health, if left untreated. To make matters worse, social stigma and a lack of awareness can prevent people from seeking the help that they need, leading to prolonged discomfort. Understanding the possible medical causes is the first step toward effective care and prevention, the doctor states.

Causes Of Pain During Intercourse

Dr Prasad says there are several potential causes of pain during intercourse, and not all are linked to fertility. "Some causes are physical, such as vaginal dryness, infections, or inflammation. Others may relate to psychological factors like anxiety, stress, or a past trauma. While these issues can affect a person's experience of intimacy, they do not necessarily impact their ability to conceive," the doctor points out.

According to the expert, certain medical conditions that cause painful intercourse could be linked to infertility. "One common example is endometriosis, a condition where tissue like the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, often leading to pain during intercourse and difficulties getting pregnant. Another condition is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which results from untreated infections and can cause scarring of the reproductive organs, reducing fertility over time. Ovarian cysts, fibroids, and anatomical abnormalities can also cause pain and, in some cases, interfere with conception," the doctor warns.

Pain Must Never Be Normalised

If someone is experiencing pain of any kind, they must not ignore or normalise it. "When pain is persistent or severe, it may be a sign that something deeper is going on. While it may not automatically mean infertility, it does mean medical attention is needed," says the doctor.

A thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider is important as it can determine the cause of the pain and offer appropriate treatment. In most cases, addressing the source of pain can improve the quality of life and also enhance fertility.

Timely Diagnosis Is Key

Ultimately, it needs to be understood that many conditions that lead to painful intercourse are treatable; early intervention can prevent complications. "It is also important for both partners to communicate openly and support one another, as emotional well-being plays a significant role in reproductive health. Recognising patterns and seeking care without delay promotes better outcomes and reduces the likelihood of chronic issues," the doctor points out.
