What is male menopause? Just like women, men go through menopause, too, when their hormone levels fluctuate at a certain age, leading with signs of physical, mental and emotional distress. But male menopause, also known as andropause, is not really talked about much. In fact, many people are not even aware of its existence. The challenges faced by menopausal women are now being discussed openly with the aim to destigmatise the topic, and it is time that men's health issues are given the spotlight, too. While the concept of andropause is debated, some -- if not all -- men experience symptoms similar to menopause in women due to hormonal changes, particularly a drop in testosterone levels with age. To understand more about it, we reached out to Dr Mansi Sharma, consultant, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, who answered a few frequently-asked questions to demystify this health topic. Read on to understand everything about male menopause, or andropause.
According to the doctor, while there is a debate around the term 'male menopause or andropause', men do tend to encounter hormonal fluctuations as they become older along with a decline in testosterone levels. They may experience symptoms like fatigue, mood changes, decreased libido, and loss of muscle mass. "It is the need of the hour to note these symptoms and consult an expert to improve a man's overall well-being. It is imperative to understand the situation better from a doctor, who can guide you with lifestyle changes and help you to manage the symptoms. Men should pay equal attention to their health just like women," Dr Sharma said.
The doctor explained that andropause is commonly linked to low testosterone levels as men age. Symptoms such as fatigue, mood changes, decreased libido, and loss of muscle mass are seen in the late 40s. These should be reported to a health expert for timely management and positive outcomes.
"Andropause leads to low testosterone levels in men as their age progresses. The symptoms linked to it are low energy levels and muscle mass, irritability, depression, anxiety, frustration, sleep disturbances, reduced cognitive function, or feelings of fatigue. These symptoms can impact a man's quality of life. The symptoms, however, vary from person-to-person," the doctor stated.
According to the doctor, men must ensure their overall well-being during this critical phase. They should be physically active, opt for a well-balanced diet comprising vital nutrients, avoid alcohol consumption, smoking, or illicit drug use, give up on processed foods, and stay stress-free by opting for relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation. Regular health check-ups and open communication with a health expert are essential to enhance the quality of life. Men must make informed decisions when it comes to their health.
The symptoms may last over many months or years, and vary from one person to another.
The doctor said that testosterone pills or injections can be prescribed to men experiencing andropause.
Some lifestyle changes that men need to make during this time include -- as mentioned earlier -- focusing on a healthy diet, an exercise routine designed by an expert and approved by the doctor, staying stress-free through yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and self-care, and getting a sound sleep of at least 8 hours every day.
