Is kulith (horse gram) good for water retention? (Ayurvedic query)

Can this nutritious legume called kulith help in relieving bloating and water retention?

I am a 27-year-old woman from Mumbai leading a very hectic lifestyle. Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that there is a considerable amount of swelling on my face and my body. So I did some research on the internet to look for natural ways to relieve the swelling. Some advised taking coffee or tea as natural diuretics. But I am strictly against consuming such beverages. An Ayurvedic website recommended eating kulith or horse gram. I have never had horse gram. I need an Ayurvedic expert’s perspective on whether horse gram can help in reducing water retention.

Kulith or horse gram is also known by other names such as kulthi or Madras gram. It is one of the lesser-known beans in the country. It is a legume that has loads of health benefits. It is an excellent source of antioxidants and protects your body from kidney and gall bladder stones. If you lead a stressful and a fast lifestyle, horse gram could be just the thing for you. In Ayurveda, it is known for its astringent properties which help in eliminating phlegm.

Coming to your query, apart from being antibacterial and antifungal, kulith or horse gram is an excellent diuretic. As compared to other methods of relieving water retention, like consuming tea and coffee, having kulith is a safer and a more nutritious option.

Eating kulith makes more sense if your bloating has to do with hormonal imbalance. Certain hormones like oestrogen and progesterone play a big role in water retention. This is why some women experience bloating during their menstrual cycle. Have kulith to balance your hormones which will them reduce the bloating in your body.
