I am a 36-year-old woman living in Mumbai. Till a month ago, I had no problems with my menses. I had a consistent 28-day cycle, I experience little or no menstrual cramps, my flow would last for four days and I had no cravings or mood swings. But this month, I had my periods only for two days and it was accompanied by a lot of menstrual cramps and mood swings. I am worried these are signs of an early menopause. My mother experienced her menopause in her late forties and I am worried that I might also follow a similar pattern. Can you please tell me if early menopause is hereditary or not? What are the reasons why women get an early menopause?
This query has been answered by Dr Namrata Pawar, Ayurvedic physician at the Dhanwantri Kerala Ayurved clinic.
I hate to confirm your fears, but early menopause can indeed be hereditary. Problems like Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and heavy menstrual flow sometimes run in the family. So there is a good chance that you may inherit your mother's menstrual pattern, but this doesn t mean you are going through a menopause yourself. There could be a lot of other reasons why your periods are delayed, so visit a good physician before you arrive at any conclusion.
There are many factors that can influence early menopause. According to Ayurvedic principles, the length of a woman s cycle can determine how early or late her menopause may happen. Those who have longer cycles (i.e. for 30-35 days) may have late menopause. But those with a shorter cycle (21-28 days) may have an early menopause. This is because there is a set number of periods a woman has in her lifetime. The shorter her cycle, the earlier the menopause.
Other reasons include stressful lifestyle, inadequate sleep, faulty diet and excessive Vatain the body, which contribute towards hormonal upheavals. Eat a diet comprising walnuts, sesame and brightly coloured vegetables. Sleep on time and avoid doing late nights.
