Try Hing or Asafoetida for your cough and cold

HingThe winters are here and with it, it brings cough and cold. Here is a simple home remedy that can help relief your cough and cold instantly.

In Ayurveda hing is considered a unique compound that holds the remedy to a number of illnesses. It is popularly used to cure respiratory tract infections, stomach ailments, skin ailments, menstrual problems and is even believed to provide relief from mental illnesses.

When it comes to respiratory infections hing is one of the oldest remedies used. Since it acts as a respiratory stimulant, an expectorant to release phlegm and relieves chest congestion. Hing has a strong anti inflammatory and antibiotic effect. It can remedy chronically dry cough, whooping cough, bronchitis and asthma. Studies have shown that antiviral drug compounds produced by the roots of the hing plant can kill H1N1 (the swine flu virus) and is being researched for the development of a new drug against the virus. For productive cough:

If you are suffering from a productive cough, mix half a tea spoon of hing powder with half a teaspoon of dry ginger powder with two spoons of honey. Mix this well to make it into a toffee like consistency. Keeps this in your mouth allowing the juice to slowly release into the mouth. This acts like a natural lozenge and helps in the production of phlegm clearing out congested lungs. Have this hing toffee this at least three times a day to get relief from a productive cough. For dry cough:

If you have a dry cough, mix half a teaspoon of hing powder with half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice and one tablespoon of honey. Mix all three ingredients well. Have one spoon three times a day. Try to keep the juice in your mouth allowing it to slowly flow down your throat. This will relieve the itching and reduce your cough, eventually giving you relief from a dry cough. For a cold:

To help relieve a cold, take a few drops of the hing oil, add two drops of the oil to a vessel of hot water and use this water for steam inhalation. You could also rub this oil on your chest, neck and back (rub the oil into the skin vigorously so as to generate some heat on the skin) to help relieve chest congestion and general discomfort.
