One of the biggest struggles most of us face while trying to study is fatigue and difficulty in retaining all the information. It is a known fact that those with better memory and alertness perform better in tests and exams. An effective way to give a much-needed boost to your memory while improving your cognitive functioning is by simply inhaling rosemary essential oil.

Before you discard this idea, continue reading. Researchers have studied the effects of essential oils on cognitive functioning for decades and after extensive studies, it has been found that rosemary oil has the ability to not only enhance your mental capabilities by making you more alert but also improve your memory. Adding rosemary to your diet is also beneficial.

In a study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience in 1998, American researchers from the Miami School of Medicine assessed 40 individuals on their mood and alertness after being given three minutes of aromatherapy using lavender and rosemary essential oils.

The participants were then given a simple math computation before and after the therapy. While the participants from the lavender group showed less depressed mood and feeling more relaxed, they also experienced drowsiness. On the other hand, the rosemary group showed increased alertness and they also had lower anxiety scores. Not only were they faster, but they were also more accurate at completing the math computations after aromatherapy with rosemary essential oil! [1]

In another study published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2003 by researchers from the University of Northumbria in the UK also revealed that inhaling rosemary essential oil has a surprising boost in the quality of the participants memory performance [2]. In this study, 144 adults participants were divided into three different groups. One group wasn t exposed to any smell, the second was exposed to lavender oil and the third one was exposed to rosemary oil.

Following that, different aspects of their mental functions were assessed using the Cognitive Drug Research assessment. Researchers observed that the groups who weren t given rosemary oil for inhalation lagged behind in testing while the rosemary oil group participants experienced a boost in the quality of their memory performance. So, consider adding rosemary essential oil to your medicine cabinet to improve your performance both, professionally and academically! Did you know, rosemary oil can also help fight acne?
