Atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis is a condition that is commonly seen in young children. According to Dr Shefali Trasi, 'Atopic dermatitis is a relapsing eczematous condition seen more commonly in infants and children. Approximately 50% of patients develop this condition by the first year of life and additional 30% develop it within 1-5 years. Initially, it was thought that these children would outgrow this eczema by adolescence; however due to changes in our lifestyle, atopic dermatitis is seen in adults as well.' What is it?

It is a condition characterized with dry, itchy and flaky patches of skin present in some parts of the body. It usually is localized on one place like the lips, elbows, legs etc. and can lead to bleeding if scratched excessively.

According to Dr Kiran Lohia, 'In atopic eczema, the most important thing to do is moisturise the affected parts often throughout the day in order to prevent excessive itchiness.'

What can you do?

Dr Shefali Trasi recommends doing the following:

Here are a few creams which you should apply as per the instructions mentioned below:

1) Apply venusia max (which is a moisturising cream) twice a day on the areas that are more prone to dry skin- like legs and elbows.

2) Apply clonate F cream on the eczema daily twice on the affected areas for 15 days.

3) Take tab Xyzal 5 mg once at night for 7 days. This will help beat the constant itching you feel.
