Call it gas, flatulence, farting or bloating, it's ultimately the same uncomfortable, embarrassing event that you're referring to and are desperately waiting to get rid of. It is not a disease or a life-threatening condition, yet it is undesirable, especially for those around you. In most cases, it is caused by the lifestyle and food habits you adopt. If passing gas is bothering you more than ever, seek relief with these lifestyle tips.
1. Eat small, frequent meals: Eating too much at a time increases the load on your digestive system. The more food your stomach has to break down, the more gas will be released during the digestion process. Instead, have three to four smaller meals throughout the day.
2. Eat slowly: People who rush through their meals are likely to experience bloating and pain resulting from trapped gas. When you eat slowly and chew your food properly, it is obvious that you'll digest it faster. As a result, the digested food will pass through the intestine easily, leaving no chance for the gas to get trapped.
3. Take a walk after eating: Sitting in one place and remaining stationary after eating will simply increase the buildup of gas and aggravate the problem. If you go for a walk or just move about your house a bit it will help to regulate the digestive process and spare you the embarrassment of any sudden and dramatic expulsions of gas.
4.Drink sufficient water: In general, every adult is advised to drink around eight glasses of plain water in a day to stay well hydrated. People with flatulence problems should take this seriously. Drinking water prevents bloating and displaces trapped gas in the intestine.
5. Eat smartly: Dr NK Sharma, a renowned naturopath, explains that the food choices we make are quite responsible for the frequency of gas problems we face. 'The main reason for gas production is that starches are digested in an alkaline medium while all proteins are digested in an acidic medium, and sadly a combination of acidic and alkaline environment cannot exist together in our digestive system. Therefore, we need to avoid eating them together. Legumes and beans contain about 25% protein and approximately 50% starch which make them difficult to digest. So, the best rule for avoiding bloating is to avoid beans.
6. Avoid carbonated beverages: Carbonated beverages are naturally gassy and are therefore likely to add to the gas generated by the breakdown of food. The more gas your swallow, the more gas you will pass.
7. Quit smoking: If you hadn't found enough reason to quit smoking here's one more. Apparently, any activity that causes you to swallow air can cause bloating and your cigarettes could be responsible for your gas problem.
