Mumbai has been witnessing fluctuating temperatures between very high to very low in the last few days, with very low humidity levels too. These changes have been attributed to the north-easterly winds. Though the cooler nights are a relief, the yo-yo temperatures are a cause for concern because it is a hotbed for the spread of viruses in the environment leading to a host of respiratory diseases. Most people suffer from sore throat, coughing, running nose and fever. Patients with chronic diseases such as asthma and bronchitis are particularly at risk. Viral infections can cause a spasm in their airways and may need hospitalisation. Our body regulates its temperature by increased sweating and maintaining adequate body temperature by preserving heat during hot and cold temperatures respectively. But huge variations in day and night temperatures confuse our body and increase physiological stress. The body is unable to regulate fluid intake resulting is dehydration, muscle cramps, fatigue, etc. Decreased fluid intake can cause toxins to build up in the body leading to serious illness. The stress also has a bearing on the body’s metabolism. It causes fluctuations in blood pressure and sugar levels. Our immunity is also decreased under these conditions making us more prone to infections. Also Read - India's first fully indigenous pneumococcal vaccine launched

  • Keep your house clean.
  • Avoid dust and air pollution. Wear a mask when outdoor. Avoid crowded places.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Use hand sanitizers in public places.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Avoid cold water.
  • Watch your diet. Eating right during lunch and dinner is important to help the body deal with temperature fluctuations and resist infection. Have warm foods during the night and fresh foods during the day. Avoid tea and coffee during the day. They can cause dehydration. Have lots of buttermilk, juices and vegetables.
