CVS - EYEHi, I am an IT professional. I really love what I do. But spending long hours in front of the computer has taken a toll on my eyes. I recently got to know that I am suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome or dry eyes. How can I prevent or minimize eye strain?

Computer Vision Syndrome is a temporary vision problem that ails majority of the urban population who spend most of their time on computers or laptops. To know more about this condition read Modern life playing havoc with people's eyes! Continuous viewing of computer screen exerts strain on your eyes and makes you susceptible to various vision related complications. Here are few simple precautionary tips that can guard you against CVS and other sight problems:

  • Wear anti-glare glasses or Zero power glasses (if you don't have corrective glasses) or use an anti-glare computer screen.
  • Keep blinking. Blinking your eyes constantly when looking at a computer replenishes the tear film present in the eyes (tears act as natural therapeutic for eyes).
  • In case you suffer from dry eyes, you can use artificial tears to keep your eyes hydrated.
  • You should take a 15-minute break every 2 hours. Alternatively, you can spend 20 seconds after every 20 minutes to look at something that is 20 feet away to prevent eye-strain.
  • Ideally, your computer screen should be around 25 inches away from your eyes and approximately at an angle of 20 degrees below your eye level (as measured from the centre of the screen).
  • Avoid bright light overhead. Position your computer screen to reflect minimum light from sunlight, windows and lamps.
